LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Chapter of Surfrider’s Blue Water Task Force has completed water-quality sampling for November.
The values in red on the graph of sampling results exceed Hawai‘i state standards of 130 organisms per 100 milliliters for a single sample and 35 organisms per 100 milliliter for a geometric mean of five or more samples.
Typically, surf and beach sites are mostly clean. For November, all sites tested above desired bacterial counts.
Most sites at or near rivers, streams or canals, showed high bacterial counts. Waiopili, Moloa‘a, Waikomo, Hanama‘ulu streams and the Hanalei River tested well above 2000 bacterial organisms per 100 milliliters of tested sample, with Anahola Stream, Hanapepe River and Mo‘ikeha Canal testing over 1000.
So all these beaches should be closed until the bacteria counts are below Federal Standards. Correct? .

With bacterial counts so high everywhere wnat is the main cause? Dairy farms( thats why muhu lepu) has high bacteria, but what about all these beaches? Very scary. Our water should be healthy, not contaminated.
These results are almost all from streams and rivers. Ocean water generally has low bacteria count.
hmmm and no tourists to blame it on…
Take a shower when you get out of the water. Clean cuts. This is nothing new.

It’s too bad that these tests do no determine the source of the bacteria. Much of our bacterial infestation is caused by feral animals.
