LIHU‘E — As Halloween is approaching quickly, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Flash Flood Watch on Monday for the islands of O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, and Ni‘ihau.
Tom Birchard, a forecaster at NWS said the Flash Flood Watch started at 6 p.m. on Monday night and will end if not extended on Thursday at 6 p.m.
“It may need to be expanded if there are other threats for heavy rains and thunderstorms that spread,” Birchard said. “There is potential for heavy thunderstorms, heavy shower repeatedly moving over the same areas or potential heavy rain locked into one place.”
Birchard’s said later tonight, there might be heavy rain that will clear up by Wednesday but then heavy rain might start again on Thursday. By Friday, the rain will move east, and an area of low pressure will linger north of the islands.
On Halloween, NWS said there might be scattered showers, partly sunny, with a high near 85. West wind three to 7 mph, with a chance of precipitation of 40%.
Later on Saturday night, possible scattered showers, mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. North wind from 3 to 8 mph, with a chance of precipitation 30%.
According to Birchard, weather conditions are fair able this weekend, but residents who live near a flooded area should keep an eye out for visitors who do not know the area during a flood watch.
For visitors, Birchard said if they are camping or hiking they should keep an eye on the sky, even if it is dry on the bottom of the hiking trail, Birchard said a flooded wave can come down from a high stream when least expected.
NWS said there are no trade winds and no tropical storm warnings in effect.
Halloween goers are advised to bring an umbrella on Saturday night.
