God help us when there is an actual emergency. 99.6% of survival rate for COVID-19. Why even wait for a vaccine???? Open up the state. Get back to work. Stop cashing the Government checks and taking the freebies.
BTW, pneumonia and influenza deaths have now been included with the “COVID-19 Deaths”. You are being played.
Mahalo Doctor.
Appreciate the respect.
Jake makes a lot of claims that are wild and never backed up. Here’s your chance (again) Jake! Cite your sources!
The Hawaii State Dept. of Health website reports a total of 5,797 deaths in Hawaii from ALL causes as of June 2020. This article states that 51 of those deaths are from COVID-19. FIFTY-ONE! Many with existing health issues and likely some that never had Covid at all.
Fear is powerful. Fear makes you run, hide, obey, and stay up at night generating more fear. We should respect and deal with Covid just like we deal with things like driving, diet, exercise etc. Don’t fear driving; drive safe and wear a seatbelt.
Our mayors, governors, and officials want us to live in fear. Just like sheep.
Let’s not be sheep.
Comment away…
Just imagine how many deaths from Covid19 there would be had all these precautions not been done.
Our mayors, governors, and officials want us to live. Full stop.
Good! Mayor Derek continues to impress.
I think I speak for all Kauai people in saying I don’t think we should have anyone leaving or entering Kauai until a vaccine is invented, then proven to be effective and safe after long term human trials across multiple independent labs.
What would happen if Wilcox ER and ICU gets full from a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th wave? Awe… Everyone, we can suck it up for 1 more year or maybe 2.
speak for yourself please. Curious what you plan to do with a vaccine. Do you plan to vaccinate people against their will?
Sheep.

@Pete,
You have got to be out of your mind to state a view point which just depicted. You are everything wrong with this situation wake up and live the little bit of life you have left and don’t be sheep. Kauai is poverish as it is and you want No economic growth for two years. I can’t wait to come over and buy 5 more vacation rentals after you and your family can’t afford to pay property taxes and the cost of inflation. Come Mayor keep up the GREAT work and lock down the county for 2 years.
Hey Pete…looks like you’re one of the sheep Joe Maka so aptly described. What a shame you allow yourself to be controlled by the politically generated fear mongering.
How disgraceful and anti-American that our illustrious mayor simply assigns to himself such a degree of illegitimate dictatorial power.
I feel sorry for you and the others in your herd. I’ll leave you with this from HL Mencken:
The average citizen finds the idea of liberty a bit alarming, Mencken wrote in his book, Notes on Democracy (1927). Instead of embracing freedom, “He longs for the warm, reassuring smell of the herd, and is willing to take the herdsman (Ige & Kawakami) with it.”
Colin McCleod
@Pete
I hope your post was sarcasm….
Pete, at least we can pass the time being entertained by Mayor D’s insta.
Can we hear what plans and preparations have been made so far? We’ve been here since March, there’s been plenty of time. What is the plan for an influx of patients at Wilcox? When and how are we going to do a decent job of tracking those in quarantine? It doesn’t seem like the the State has made any progress. What about Kauai?
Hey Pete
1.5 million people a year die from tuberculous world wide and we have a vaccine. And DK, the CDC has changed its guidelines on Masks, Quarantines and testing but your policies are not about listening to science or doctors anymore (not that it ever was). Its about political fear mongering and control. Like I said since June, no matter what happens the dictators will not open the state until after the election but by then the destruction of the islands economy will be complete.
Yes, TB had lots of deaths, worldwide, even though there IS a vaccine – just not used in several parts of the world. In the USA, in 2017 (the most recent stat I see) there were 515 deaths from TB.
If we can get a handle on Covid19 like we did TB, I think we’d all agree things would be lots better.
But if you want the island(s) completely opened up with no controls, you will see the economy tank seriously when even more people are dying. Right now the USA has a 5-6% death rate from this. That’s with people (the same ones, anyway) doing what they can to stave it off. Imagine if none of these measures were in place.
I bet you Kawadummy has money on this.
He’s a public servant in charge of saving as many lives as possible. His job literally means protecting citizens. So yeah, dumb bet.
Cowered Commee! Fearful,Inept and Crafty! Beware Kauaians,of Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing!
The hype machine in Washington D.C. determines how bad they need it to be and they send out whatever numbers match that need. If you are old and sick, stay home. Everyone else should be back to normal with minor behavioral changes.
