Virtual means there are no people (other than performers), but the excitement is still there as Gerald Hirata’s social media page picked up lots of comments about the Virtual Bon Dance that spanned two days and several different events around the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe.
Virtual means there are no people (other than performers), but the excitement is still there as Gerald Hirata’s social media page picked up lots of comments about the Virtual Bon Dance that spanned two days and several different events around the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe.
Ron Wood was hosting his first bon dance, ever (the one you stopped by on the Big Island doesn’t count because you didn’t get any flying saucers) and knew exactly which headband to use to match the special commemorative face mask created from a bon dance towel (Good job, Ann Hashisaka and her sidekicks!)
The bon dance was not limited to the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple as the Taiko Kaua‘i people were going to visit Rev. Tomo Hojo at the West Kaua‘i Hongwanji, Hanapepe Temple following their appearance.
And more virtual is on the horizon as the Honpa Hongwanji Mission celebrates Peace Day Hawai‘i (it’s coming up, Sept. 21) with a hybrid offering…Carol Valentine is in the process of collecting video for the virtual candlelight scheduled for Sept. 18, and Roberta Yanagawa said the Peace Banner will be hung outside the Kapa‘a Hongewanji Mission when it’s ready so people can view it with social distancing in mind…no crowds.
The 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer’s is also going virtual with the Mainstage events taking place at various dates and sponsored by Edward Jones, CVS Health, and Kaua‘i’s FM97 (Ron Wood is going virtual, again). Applications and donation forms are available, now at www.act.alz.org.
Finally, there’re two more days (Wednesday and Thursday! at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall) to donate blood to the Blood Bank of Hawai‘i…appointments only at bloodbanktough.org, or (808) 848-4770.
