Chef Carla Dusenberry (yep, she did wonders with that fundraising bento Saturday during the Kaua‘i Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji virtual bon dance) has reprinted her cookbook that has all kinds of broke-da-mouth stuff like “Smash ‘Ahi Poke, Pipipi,” where if you’re looking for how many tablespoons, teaspoons or ounces…you’re outa luck.

“Just heat huli-huli sauce, ginger and garlic; add kupe‘e (night tsubu) and cook about six to eight minutes; turn off fire. Let sit to let kupe‘e soak up sauce. Remove cover with needle (works really good…not the kine with head, the kind you sew with), or toothpick, dig out meat, and suck the shell and roll your eyes K-GOOD!”

Randy Francisco was doing back-to-back duty with Roy Miyashiro and the veteran flying saucer gang (they also do yakitori and even teri meat) starting with the Japanese Grandma flying saucer fundraiser (What? Les Tamashiro didn’t know about that?), then doing the shrimp and meat at the virtual bon dance, where Rebecca Carnate didn’t have her Zonta Spirit Sign because she was the nurse of record doing temperature checks.
Kudos to New Hope Lihu‘e Pastor John and Rhonda Cabello on a great food giveaway that jumped the gun because there were so many people showing up early. Wait for the next one, and come early, too.
Kudos, too, to Mel Rapozo and Charlie Iona for hosting those face-mask giveaways for kupuna, veterans and keiki from a donation by Minnie Ko. Nice to see Doug Moises (Da DougOut is still being worked on in the Pi‘ikoi Building of the Lihu‘e Civic Center) and Tyson Moises (Coach Dallas Correa would’ve been proud to see that baseball shirt).
