NAWILIWILI — When the first flags fly, Thursday at 5 p.m., the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Race Committee will be hosting the first race of the NYC Gene Wells Memorial Series following last week’s final race of the NYC Rum Series that was taken overall by Fast Company.
Fast Company, finishing last week’s race second to Kato, was awarded the overall trophy for the Rum Series based on the number of wins the crew accumulated over the seven-race series.
Gusty winds plagued the nine-boat fleet throughout the 6.03-mile, three-leg course as Weatherly with its young crew finished the first leg in the lead only after Bonjolea II tried to gain control of its spinnaker at the harbor mouth.
The scenario changed multiple times throughout the three legs until Bonjolea II stabilized the race at the lead and held on to take line honors, or first to finish, on an elapsed sail of 1 hour, and 29 seconds. The gap between Bonjolea II’s finish and the elapsed sail of 1:02:40 produced by Kato was not great enough to overcome the handicap as Bonjolea II corrected to 1:05:05 PHRF and third place.
Kato was deemed the race winner on a 1:03:21 PHRF, just 21 ticks ahead of Fast Company who clocked a 1:03:19 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:03:43 PHRF.
Weatherly, finishing ahead of OZone on a 1:07:59 elapsed sail, corrected to 1:02:04 Club for top honors in that class. Papa A‘u (1:10:58 elapsed) corrected to 1:03:22 Club and Iwa (1:22:52 elapsed) corrected to 1:04:26 Club for third place honors in the class.
