Another round of kudos to Kirk and Tora Smart and the Strings of Joy ‘ohana for last week’s distribution of Kala ‘ukulele for Kaua‘i’s graduating seniors. There’re more than 750 of them, and kudos to all those contributors for making this a special year for the seniors. Denise Kaufman (she’s one of the Island School’s founding mothers) was helping Maile Bryan and Tora unload all the instruments at Kukui Grove Center on the way to Waimea.

Thomas Nizo was checking to see that the Westside seniors got to mind their p’s and q’s with the COVID-19 screenings at the historic Waimea Theatre. Too bad Gina’s at Yumi’s was too early for the Friday-night saimin opening.
Mahalo, Michelle Young and the Friends of the Waimea Public Library for the Smarties (didn’t need to wait on Halloween) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Waimea Public Library that fell on Aug. 1. Too bad there’s COVID-19 in the air — people would love the break from all that Westside afternoon heat.
And kudos to Jean Souza and Aaron Swink (he said trout fishing was really good, this year — I know, Cynthia Chiang called to ask if we needed any) on getting the grab-and-go learning kits (it’s learning kits, not back to school, Steve Soltysik).
Don’t forget, opening day for The Koloa Early School is Monday (don’t forget your face masks), and opening day for Alaka‘i O Kaua‘i is Tuesday (bus service doesn’t start until Aug. 17).
