Kilauea is not very close to where everything was taking place Saturday, said East Kaua‘i Lions Club President Janice Bond, who was waiting on the club’s newest member, County Councilmember Felicia Cowden, to make an appearance at the Lions Celebrate America’s Birthday flag-waving (we needed Ed Keopuhiwa’s ‘ukulele — he’s got a Kamaka — rendering of “God Bless America”), where Dickie Chang (he said they’ve got a huge Chinatown on O‘ahu shindig in the works for after this COVID-19 thing), Harvey Kinoshita and Ron Garlie were competing for who had the biggest flag, and Roy Nishida had one of those clear, plastic, full-face masks created by the Cyber Lions (they’re from O‘ahu, too).

Tiffany Sagucio may not be physically powerful (she had face mask on, and a camera strapped around her neck while moving all (Kelvin Moniz said 500) those food packages packed by the Kula Aupuni Ni‘ihau A Kahelelani Aloha puboic charter school volunteers. Yoshi L’Hote had his ‘Aina Ho‘okupu O Kilauea ‘ohana in tow for the Caring for Community event (Kudos to Stephanie Iona on coordinating this massive effort), where Paul Zina and Melissa Speetjens used the Waimea Canyon Middle School (that covered play court is coming along nicely) drive-thru to keep the traffic off the highway.
Tiffany and Paul got some hands-on with the popcorn on the cob from Sarah Thompson of Beck’s Hybrids, and former Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. got more than a football workout as he and County Councilmember KipuKai Kuali‘i did the heavy food (hamburger from Bobby Farias, eggs and what else?) lifting.
