Traditionally, Dickie Chang of Wala‘au Productions would have been with the Kaua‘i Hospice and the Concert in the Sky event on July 4.
But the COVID-19 pandemic turned things upside down and resulted in the cancellation of the Concert in the Sky, and a host of other community gatherings.
“I was invited,” Chang said. “I found out about what they were doing, and they invited me to join them.”
Under the direction of newly-installed East Kaua‘i Lions Club president Janice Bond, the club turned out to celebrate America’s birthday as a Lions Zone Project with EK Lion Harvey Kinoshita heading the effort.
“This is a statewide project of the newly-install District Governor Garrett Ogawa,” said Bond. “Other Lions clubs are invited to join the effort in their own towns.”
Kinoshita said in addition to the Lihu‘e effort fronting the historic County Building, the Koloa Lions Club was expected to host a similar flag celebration on Maluhia Road near the Lions’ sign entering Koloa town, and the West Kaua‘i Lions Club, having its officers installed by Ogawa via distance conferencing, was scheduled to wave flags outside of Wong’s Restaurant, their home center.
