Sadness over Foodland’s closing
About 30 years ago, students from St. Catherine School wrote a commercial praising Foodland Market and entered it in Foodland’s statewide song contest.
Our school won a prize from Mr. Sullivan himself, some money and “pride” for our school. That’s the kind of store that Foodland is — always involving the schools and caring for us shoppers with rewards (Can’t forget that yummy watermelon for a dollar or a free turkey with a “My Rewards” card) Maika‘i. It’s a sadness, a passing era, that Foodland is leaving the Kapa‘a-Wailua area.
If only we could shop there all the time and be greeted by friendly locals wearing their green shirts. We send aloha to your employees and management. This must be a difficult decision. Our song won the contest with this first line from the Beatles song, “Strawberry Fields.” “Let me take you down, cuz we’re goin’ to Foodland.”
Sincerely hoping for a miracle.
Mary Gannon Alfiler, Kapa‘a
Suit against Ige has no merit, no chance
The 13 people who tried suing Ige dropped their case, because they just couldn’t. Now, they are trying to sue the state for damages, according to KHNL TV news, June 25.
Just give up. It is my gut feelings, and I am normally right, that you all don’t have a case. It appears that all of you are in some sort of businesses, and you all are suffering. Am I right?
In our own ways, we too are suffering, but we all take them with some strides, knowing we can’t and won’t change anything. I’d like to sue the state and the government for a lot of things, but it would be a losing cause.

So sorry to see Foodland go! It was a gathering place for us locals, and the service, food availability, and all the rest were wonderful! Thank you Foodland for helping our Island for so long! You will be missed as we all suffer the negatives, helplessness, and pain, along our unfortunate journey to a deteriorated tomorrow!
I concur, very sad to see Kapaa Foodland leave. A part of my Kauai lifestyle since before I ever moved here. I remember my first time going in as a resident/ kamaaina and feeling like I finally made it! Now another big empty space on the Eastside, hope it doesn’t stay empty as long as the other great empty space, Coco Palms.
Foodland…best poke and deli on the Eastside! Now what?
The most logical point I saw you make. Ray Domingo. I’m serious.
