LIHU‘E — The National Weather Service reported Tropical Depression Boris moved into the central Pacific basin early Friday afternoon.
Boris, which was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression late Friday morning, is located 1,485 miles southeast of Lihu’e, moving towards Hawai‘i at a speed of seven mph.
The NWS Kaua‘i weather forecast will not be impacted during the next five days, as NWS Meteorologist Gavin Shigesato said the storm is anticipated to lose intensity once it reaches the islands.
No tropical cyclones are to be expected in the next five days, according to Shigesato.
“It doesn’t look like there will be any impact on island weather because of the remnant moisture in the now-tropical depression,” Shigesato said.
As Boris moves over cooler water in the eastern portion of the central Pacific over the weekend, it isn’t expected to affect land. As a result, the system is expected to transition into a non-tropical system, according to Accuweather.
The surf report forecasts waves at three to four feet at the highest on the North Shore.
“This system’s surf is pretty weak in terms of bringing waves here,” Shigesato said. “There probably won’t be much increase in the storm swell. Stronger systems develop surf-wise than what we are getting, and nothing now is Boris-related.”
The five-day outlook for Kaua‘i is consistent with temperatures being in the high 70s, and only scattered showers are predicted during the afternoon in Monday’s forecast.
“This storm is pretty much dying, and it’s pretty far south,” Shigesato said. “We aren’t expected to see any weather feature or impact from Boris.”
During hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 to November 30, the NWS recommends being vigilant.
Boris is the second tropical storm to form since the beginning of the season, but the first to cross into the central basin.
“Maybe there is nothing to worry about with this specific storm, but we urge residents to be prepared during hurricane season,” Shigesato said. “It’s essential to be aware of what is going on.”
