NAWILIWILI — This year’s Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament will not take place, Sunday as originally posted on the Nawiliwili Yacht Club calendar.
“This year’s Keiki Fishing Tournament must be cancelled, and wait until next year when the gathering of large groups will be acceptable to the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the County of Kaua‘i,” said NYC Commodore Fred Styer in announcing the cancellation.
Earlier last week, the Nawiliwili Yacht Club had received approval to resume its racing calendar under COVID-19 health and safety guidelines from both state and local officials. The response was an enthusiastic turnout from sailors and crew who have been grounded for about three months due to the COVID shutdowns.
Officials were hopeful the Father’s Day event would also gain approval from officials, but the application was turned down.
The Nawilwili Yacht Club will continue its shoreline series, Thursday with the NYC Rum Series, Race No. 2, and invites spectators to watch the excitement with its Race Committee from the jetty wall parking area when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
