LIHU‘E — The county is poised to receive $28,715,551 as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds as a sub-recipient of the $862,823,979 received by the state.
To actually get a hold of these funds, the county must submit a plan and budget, signed certificates for the state’s handbook, and a point of contact overseeing the use of the funds by June 12, according to a memo sent from Gov. David Ige on Wednesday.
This money will go toward expenditures incurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic on items that occurred from March 1 to December 30 of this year.
The governor has also stipulated that the money go toward items not accounted for in the most recently approved budget as of March 27, when the CARES Act was enacted.
The county is centering its spending priorities on direct assistance; economic and supply chain resilience; and response and preparation for future COVID-19-related emergencies, according to a memo sent from the county’s Managing Director Michael Dahilig to the Kaua‘i County Council.
“These spending priorities are anticipated to be funded equally to ensure these areas at least receive a portion of the support,” Dahilig wrote.
A draft budget is forthcoming to the council, which will have a Special Council Meeting on Wednesday, June 10 at 8:30 a.m.
