Life is still far from “back to normal” on Kaua‘i, even though shops, beaches and restaurants are starting to reopen. Thankfully, our number of active COVID19 cases on the island is holding at zero.
Within the state, reports of new cases have slowed — though they still continue to mount.
We seem to be in a lull in between the waves of coronavirus activity public health officials say come part and parcel to pandemics.
Even so, people are struggling with loss of finances, mental and physical health, drug and alcohol addiction, and others. Safer At Home orders are still in place and government officials warn everything could be put back on pause and residents ordered to return to their homes if the COVID19 virus reappears on Kauai.
We live in uncertain times, but one thing has been clearly demonstrated since COVID19 countermeasures were instated: Kaua‘i is full of heroes.
You may have read about a few of them in the Wednesday editions of The Garden Island over the past few weeks — residents making sure their neighbors are fed and health care workers safeguarding our kupuna.
The Kaua‘i community nominates these people to be featured in the weekly segment. These are the people who are going above and beyond for their communities, making a difference during this time of pandemic.
We call them our Hometown Heroes.
Know anyone who should be celebrated for actions they’ve taken over the past few months; unsung heroes who dedicate time to helping out Kaua‘i? We want to hear about these people.
Maybe you know someone doing more than their fair share of caregiving or finding ways to raise money for nonprofits or charities, picking up litter on socially distanced walks or dropping off supplies for someone in need.
These people are the ones fostering extra animals, helping with childcare, and providing other services to help out the community during the pandemic. They’re putting in extra energy to take care of the emotional, physical and social needs of the community.
Nominate these people or organizations to be highlighted in our Hometown Heroes weekly feature and give them a few kudos for all their hard work.
It’s our way of saying mahalo to the difference-makers on the island.
Nominating someone for the Hometown Heroes weekly Wednesday feature can be done two ways, via phone or email. We just need the name and phone number of the person or organization you’re nominating and a short description of why they are a Hometown Hero.

My Aunt Tracey is a police officer and i’m proud of her. She just got promoted to Sergeant. I think that she is the perfect candidate for hometown hero. So I nominate my Aunt Tracey, she is the coolest police i’ve ever met.
I nominate my Aunt Tracey. She was just promoted to Sergent at her police department in Dover De.
