LIHUE — The Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation announced its 2020 scholarship recipients, awarding $8,000 in scholarships to 10, four-year college/university recipients and community college/ vocational school recipients.
Following is the of recipients attending a four-year college or university this fall:
• Kyler Arruda-Sukehira, $1,000, Kapa‘a High, to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and major in medicine;
• Mosiah Bautista, $1,000, Kaua‘i High senior, to attend the University of Pepperdine, majoring in computer science;
• Aljon Glovasa, $1,000, Kapa‘a High, Chaminade University, majoring in journalism;
• Allana Pinoliar, $1,000, Kapa‘a High, to attend the UH-Manoa, majoring in psychology;
• Shaelyn Tavares, $1,000, Kapa‘a High, to attend the University of San Diego, majoring in environmental and civil engineering;
• Kallen Wachi, $1,000, Waimea High, to attend the University of North Dakota, majoring in aviation;
• Kian La‘i Viernes, $500, Kapa‘a High, to attend UH-Manoa, majoring in mechanical engineering.
Following is the of recipients attending a community college or vocational school this fall:
• Junelle Tangalin, $500, Kapa‘a High, to attend Kapi‘olani Community College to become a paramedic;
• Marvin DePeralta, $500, Kaua‘i Community College, to attend the University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu, majoring in counseling;
• Talia Washington, $500, Kapa‘a High, to attend Centralia Community College, majoring in physical therapy.
All recipients met the criteria of attaining cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or above, submitting a personal essay, two letters of recommendation, list of community service, transcripts and proof of Filipino ancestry.
Proceeds from the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation Labor Day Golf Tournament go towards the scholarship fund. The golf tournament has raised over $125,000 in the past 16 years for the youth scholarship program. This is the foundation’s only fundraiser.
The purpose of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation is to serve as the fundraising arm of the Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce, which has a membership of 100.
The KFCCF Scholarship Committee members are Cyndi Ayonon, chair; and Rose Benzel, Mary Jane Garasi, Crystal Caday and Juno Apalla, members.
“It’s the mission of our chamber to support the youth in furthering their education, and to perpetuate the Filipino culture in the community,” said Ayonon.
She continues: “For years, I’ve served on the scholarship committee, and it’s such a rewarding experience to be able to help our recipients pursue their dream in attending college.”
