Kudos to former Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. who was playing dad, Saturday during the food distribution coordinated by Leilani Mindoro and the collective efforts of the unions on Kaua‘i. With all of the offices and stores closed because of being “non-essential,” the distribution was a good time to see people like Shari Amimoto and Kaulana Finn, who had uniform Hawai‘i Government Employees Association fabric face masks upcycled from HGEA shirt material by Queenie Pezario Daligdig (no wonder she’s part of the Kaua‘i Family and Community Education. Anyone working remotely on Character Counts?).

The Carvalho brothers (that’s what Shari called Mayor Bernard’s sons) were busy, and it was good to see them available to help all the kupuna from the Rice Street Camp with their food (Carol Manera Texeira — come on, the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce is not “non-essential!” — even came out to get food for her mother).
Kaua‘i County Councilmember Felicia Cowden came to town “to listen to the people,” Councilmember Luke Evslin wasn’t out doing his constitutional with the children, and Alden Alayvilla was laden with a huge backpack of equipment during the walk-around by people wanting to enjoy the beaches and get out of the house (especially with the nice Saturday weather).
