HONOLULU — Hawai‘i National Guard soldiers and airmen are supporting the state Department of Transportation with the medical screening of incoming and departing passengers as well as airline crew at five Hawai‘i airports, beginning today in Honolulu.
Guardsmen are supporting Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on O‘ahu and Hilo International Airport on Hawai‘i Island from today. Support at Kahului Airport on Maui, Lihu‘e Airport and Ellison Onizuka International Airport at Keahole Kona on Hawai‘i Island will be starting soon, according to a news release.
Guardsmen will be located at the passenger-arrival gates and Transportation Security Administration security checkpoints to assist DOT staff with medical screening that has been put in place during the COVID-19 crisis.
Arriving passengers from domestic and international destinations, as well as departing interisland passengers, will have their temperature taken to determine if an additional medical screening is necessary. The guardsmen will not be armed while conducting this support mission.
By today, 342 guardsmen will have been activated to assist county and state agencies with civil-support missions.
