The mayor’s annual age-group track meet that was scheduled April 4 and 5 has been canceled, announced the county’s Department of Parks &Recreation Thursday afternoon.
This is just one of several events being called off due to the county’s Department of Parks &Recreation announcing the closure of various county facilities and events starting Monday, March 16, and continuing for a period of 60 days.
The closures are prompted due to public-health concerns regarding novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.
The closures will impact all private parties and community events at all of the County of Kaua‘i pavilions, all camping at county beach parks, all indoor sporting events at county facilities, all events taking place at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall, and all large gatherings of more than 100 people, including private parties and community events at all of the County of Kaua‘i properties.
The Wailua Golf Course and both the Waimea and Kapa‘a swimming pools will operate during normal business hours, with facility caretakers enhancing the disinfecting protocols.
Additionally, the county’s Spring Fun programs at the Lihu‘e and Hanapepe neighborhood centers will continue to operate normal business hours with enhanced disinfecting protocols.
Mayor Derek Kawakami signed an emergency proclamation March 4 for the County of Kaua‘i in order to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the people of Kaua‘i from the potential spread of the COVID-19. The proclamation was issued in coordination with the governor’s office and other counties in the state.
Wednesday, the Kaua‘i County Council approved the release of $2 million from the Disaster Response Reserves fund for the purpose of funding emergency expenditures to meet the public emergency needs related to COVID-19.
