PUHI — There were four pick up stations, and yet, the line of cars waiting on their Kiwanis of Kaua‘i Steak Fry plates congested at times, Sunday in front of Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering.
“They’ve been very busy from 7:30 this morning,” said Cheryl Shintani, a Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i member. “We even had plates going out before we opened at 10:30.”
The Kiwanis, with the help of Key Club members from both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a high schools, hosted its annual Steak Fry plates with the proceeds going toward providing Kiwanis scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
“They started cooking, early,” said Kiwanis member Patrick Ono waiting for his delivery orders to be completed. “Mark’s Place is closed, but letting us use the place for the Steak Fry. They’re so good.”
Ono was also on hand, Saturday night at the Big Brothers Big Sisters bowling where Mark’s Place provided a buffet line for the benefit of bowlers and supporters of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kaua‘i.
The Kiwanis’ Steak Fry replaces the long-time traditional French Toast Breakfast after the Department of Education school cafeteria became unavailable for community group functions like the Kiwanis, or Lions Clubs.
Alan Okuhara of Mark’s Place was busy with the bowling function and joined Kiwanis and Key Club members, Sunday in prepping the numerous plate lunches.
“Somebody has to do this,” he said. “We’re normally closed, but we can use the facilities to help the clubs out. It’s for a good cause.”
Shintani said the group had gone through about 900 plates by lunch, Sunday.
“The more we sell, the more scholarships we can provide,” Shintani said. “There’s no limit on scholarships, the more we have, the more we can give.”
