Michael Gmelin, Joyce Nakahara and Carolynn Lum (she enjoyed Belle reading to the keiki) enjoy lunch following a busy morning of “Read Across America” Saturday at Kukui Grove Center while, behind them, Brenda Turville Biehler of Showtime Characters (they’ll be back this Sunday, March 15, for St. Patrick’s Day festivities) starts disassembling the library scene.

Pauline Street shows off her “Hawaiian Welcome” and “Mele e ke kai” pieces at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists’ Spring Show when the exhibit opened Saturday at the KSA gallery in Kukui Grove Center.

What? You missed the Prince Kuhio event at the Kaua‘i Museum (kudos to Chucky Boy Chock, Liyah Kama Drake [Kaylyn has her Third annual Keiki Fun Day and Burn Out Suicide event coming up Saturday, March 21 at Kapa‘a Beach Park…keiki day starts at noon, and the fire knife dancing starts at 6:30 p.m.] on a great presentation) where kupuna Ihi Kaneali‘i narrated the story of Kuhio, liberally enhanced with mele and hula performances from kumu hula Naomi Yokotake (Kaliko Santos of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs said she’s the president of ‘Ahahui Kiwika Hawai‘i o Mo‘ikeha Hawaiian Civic Club) and Halau Hula o Hanalei (was nice to see Koko Kaneali‘i and coach Mits Yokotake — and Aunty Vicky — outside of Kapa‘a High School boys basketball)? For those who need to see this, the group will present again on Tuesday, March 18 at the Princeville Public Library starting at 5 p.m., at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort &Spa (this is one not to miss) on Friday, March 20 starting from around 9:30 a.m., and at The Cliffs at Princeville Monday, March 23, starting at 4 p.m.
