Happy birthday to Bev Pang, who missed being a leap-year baby by just one day. Bev was among the throng of people taking a break from all that wind at the Hinamatsuri, or Girls Day festivities (kudos to Pearl Shimizu of the Kauai Japanese Cultural Society and Melissa McFerrin-Warrack of Kukui Grove Center), where the birthday girl was celebrating with mochiko chicken and nishime.

Someone said the nishime was sold out at the Asian Blend Bazaar (kudos to Morton Yamasaki of the Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission) where hundreds (the line before they opened the doors was way back to the back stairs of the temple) were also able to take a break from the wind, and Richard Kuga was delayed from shopping because he was single-handedly trying to manage the parking. And, anyone take in the Kaua‘i All-Island Band rummage sale that was taking place at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center?
Mel Rapozo’s grandma, Otilda Medeiros, also celebrated her centennial (100th) birthday Saturday. Mel said she wanted a lu‘au at Aloha Stadium, but had to settle for a mini version of that at the Garden Island Healthcare &Rehabilitation at the Wilcox Medical Center.
Kudos to Lance Segawa and all those Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation people on taking the time to acknowledge the hard work volunteers (some even had time to take in the Asian Blend Bazaar before the luncheon) do at both Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. Lance was joined by Mayor Derek and Monica Kawakami, state Reps. Nadine Nakamura and James Tokioka in visiting and chatting with each of the volunteers who enjoyed the hospitality of Gaylord’s restaurant (see the story and photo, A4).
Rose Anne Jones had her own “super volunteers” Roy and Holly Harris at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery who were preparing for the opening of the spring show this Friday. The reception comes at the end because people’s choices are important.
