HANAPEPE — The county Department of Public Works announced that repairs to the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge have been completed and the bridge is once again open to the public.
Large debris from runoff during a flash flood on Christmas Day last year caused severe damage to the bridge, and closed it to the public for several weeks.
A 40-foot section of the bridge was damaged during that flash flood, and workers had to replace floor joists, walking planks, plank supports and the railings, along with the bracing.
The cost to repair the bridge was $10,000.
“We thank the Hanapepe community, the Hanapepe Economic Alliance, and the community for your patience during the repair period of the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge,” said Mayor Derek Kawakami.
“Our crews with the Department of Public Works worked diligently to ensure this historic bridge was in safe and working conditions before it was reopened to the public.”
