HILO — The Waimea High School girls basketball team fell to Hanalani 63-60 in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Snapple Girls basketball championships Thursday afternoon at the Hilo Civic Center.
The Menehune entered the contest as the lower seed, playing a team that has won six-consecutive Hawai‘i High School Association Division II basketball championships.
The Menehune generated several points in transition, scoring 12 points off turnovers throughout the contest.
One main difference in this closely contested battle was points scored in the paint.
The state-experienced Royals generated a total of 26 points in the paint to the Menehune’s 14.
The Menehune outscored the Royals in second-chance points, 11-8, and in bench points, 4-0.
Late in the fourth quarter, Menehune Lishae Scanlan scored a game-tying basket at 60.
However, a layup by Royals’ Faith Mersburg followed by a successful free throw iced the game, 63-60.
