KAPAA — Michael Binonwangan, a second-grade student at St. Catherine School, said he’s going to work on his dinosaur model that accompanied the book he picked up at the book sale, Sunday at Coyle Hall where refreshments were being served.
“We’re learning about dinosaurs,” Michael said as he was joined by his brother Martin while his dad, Martian, went through the newly-acquired book with them. “I have this model that shows the skeleton of a dinosaur, and I also have an invisible pen where what you write, you can’t see. You need a special light to see the words.”
The book sale that continues through Friday afternoon was just one event marking the start of Catholic Schools Week for the St. Catherine School with a student population of about 150 students in Pre-K through Grade 8, and the St. Theresa School that boasts a student population of about 140 students.
“This is a pretty good school,” said Martian Binonwangan. “I have three kids attending this school, and they’re all doing well.”
With a theme of “Bringing to Light the Best We can Become,” the students at St. Catherine School celebrate themed activities on each day, Wednesday having their pets blessed by Father Anthony Rapozo following Morning Assembly.
Students in PreK to grade 7 are invited to wear red, white, or blue to celebrate nation, and students in Grade 8 will dress “professionally” to job shadow teachers on campus.
St. Theresa School, celebrating family, respect, community, Restoring Pono, fellowship, and creativity during Catholic Schools Week, will feature its STREAM Night on the Kekaha campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m. where the middle school science fair will take place along with games, food booths, and more.
David Adams, the St. Catherine School principal, said he is looking at sports as a co-curricular activity with St. Theresa School.
Thursday, this comes a step closer to reality as both school enjoy a joint day with the focus on vocations at the Lydgate Park.
“Both schools will come together and play sports such as volleyball, soccer, and obstacle courses against each other as we try to bring back sports to our schools,” Adams said. “I love sports.”
