WAILUA — The Kapaa High School girls paddling team edged out Kauai High School by two points to claim the division title, Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship regatta held at the Wailua River.
The Warrior wahine crew set the pace early in the day, stroking the .5-mile sprints course on a 5 minutes, 7.28 seconds run. The ladies continued its dominance by breaking the 5-minute mark with a 4:57.81 run during the finals.
Waimea finished by capturing top honors in the Varsity Boys and Varsity Mixed division, the Menehune clearing the sprints course on a 4:23.90 run in the Varsity Boys finals, and stroking to a 4:43.00 run in the Varsity Mixed finals, nearly six seconds ahead of the runner up team.
With the results of the Saturday regatta, the Kapaa girls, and the Waimea teams in the Varsity Boys and Varsity Mixed divisions will advance to the Hawaiian Airlines Hawaii High School Athletic Association canoe paddling championships that will take place at Ke‘ehi Lagoon on Oahu, Feb. 8.
