HANAPEPE — The Waimea High School boys soccer team squeezed out a 1-0 win, Thursday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys soccer game that was played at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Outrunning an Island School squad that felt its way through the opening half, Waimea’s Bryden Lumabao found the net in traffic at the 13th minute, raising cheer from the home stand that was bundled against the wind chill.
The Voyagers settled down during the break and following adjustments went to the short game to control the Menehune in the second half. Despite the adjustments that resulted in the Voyagers’ successful penetration into the scoring territory, the Menehune defense held to preserve the 1-0 edge at the final whistle.
Action at the Hanapepe Stadium continues, Monday when the Waimea girls’ team, finishing No. 3 in the KIF, will take the field in a play-in contest for The Queen’s Medical Center Hawaii High School Athletic Association girls Division 2 championships that will take place at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Feb. 5 through 8 on Oahu.
The Menehune wahine will kick off at 1 p.m. against the Honoka‘a Dragon wahine of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation for eligibility into one of the berths in the Division 2 state tournament.
If successful, Waimea will join the other two KIF teams — Kauai High School, and Kapaa High School — represented at the state tournament.
The KIF boys soccer will continue Wednesday when Waimea travels to Vidinha Stadium to match up against the Kapaa Warriors. The Junior Varsity boys take the field starting at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting at 6:45 p.m.
Kauai High School boys will travel to the Island School fields for a single match against the Voyagers starting at 4 p.m.
The Queen’s Medical Center HHSAA boys Division 2 state championships will take place Feb. 10 through 15 with the KIF having just one team represented.
