Comedy Central and Netflix comedian Ari Shaffir will be performing at Kauai Community College’s Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The New York comedian has never been to Kauai. He is looking forward to hiking, driving the speed limit and eating what the locals eat.
Through the grapevine, he heard and learned of the term “haole,” and promises he will do his best not to earn that title.
“I’m excited to meet the people and make them laugh, help them escape their daily troubles. I am also excited to escape the cold New York weather myself. It is too cold. If you want to visit New York, you should come in April. It’s not cold then,” Shaffir said.
His father and grandmother were Holocaust survivors. He was born and raised in New York before they moved to different states.
Shaffir decided to become a comedian after college and made that typical move to Los Angeles, where he learned the art of comedy.
“I had two choices: One, work a 9-to-5 job. Two, do this for me and become a stand-up comedian,” he said.
He has been doing stand-up for 20 years. He loves connecting with audiences and making them forget their worries.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are$35.50 and $39.50, available at Eventbrite.com.

Note to Stephanie Shinno: the word “haole” is equivalent to white people what the word “jap” would be to you. Don’t use it.
Did anyone go to this silly thing? What’s happening at the theater at KCC? They keep bringing in stuff no one goes to.
Haole is a mentality, not a necessarily a skin color…
