LIHUE — Augie Tulba will be performing at the Historic Waimea Theatre on Jan. 25.
But he’s here to do more than just make people laugh.
It is a benefit comedy show to help restore the theater, which suffered damages estimated at $200,000 in flooding that resulted from the Christmas storm, said theater manager Thomas Nizo.
“We are so grateful to Augie for thinking of us,” he said.
Augie T. is a former radio DJ, and has been an entertainer for 28 years. Last year, he announced he was not doing any more big comedy shows, only fundraiser shows. His last show on Kauai was a full house.
But because of the water damages at the theater, he will return to Kauai. The minute he heard of what happened to Waimea Theatre, he talked to Nizo and told him he would do a fundraiser.
“The people on Kaua’i have shown me so much, love,” he said.
Tulba has ties to Kauai. His grandma’s last name is Silva and she was one of the first waves of Portuguese to come to Hawaii. She worked in the plantation as well.
When Tulba was asked what his Kauai fans could expect from his upcoming show, he said:
“I called it quit last March. I no longer do big shows, if I do I show it’s to help. That’s why I am coming back. Come laugh and know you helping the theater.”
Nizo said the theater will also be the new host of the Waimea Town Celebration from Feb 15-23, with proceeds going to the theater.
Tickets are $15 at the theater or at www.augiet.com.
Hawai’I’s entertainer. I saw him in person. He was popular in Honolulu. I wonder if west side people know him.
