Rita DeSilva (how many of you remember when she was the editor at TGI?) used to always have a picture of cane tassels appearing on the pages of TGI as a reminder of the season, and on Saturday, the specimen growing in the Kauai Community College loi (taro field) finally decided it would open its plume to the blowing winds that have been pelting the island over the past few days. The Kauai Interscholastic Federation sprints canoe-paddling regatta was canceled due to the Wailua River being messed up and the Nawiliwili Harbor waters resembling coffee with cream (talk about brown water!).

The weather couldn’t stop Brian Yamamoto of the KCC from getting the students from Iwate University of Japan to tour the Kauai Community Market in Puhi for some hands-on sampling and discussions with Kauai farmers as part of their Kauai tour studying forestry and general agriculture. Brian said the group even got to talk with Earl Kashiwagi of Esaki’s Produce on a separate tour before the group leaves Wednesday.
These were just some of the subjects (shoppers loved watching Pit and Palm Dang of Dang Farms getting their photographs taken for an ad shot!) that Jim Connelly of Washington state was having fun with his Sony R100x (version VI!) that was the same camera the late Carol Ann Davis used to always pack because it was so small and produced some great photos with its Zeiss lens.
