“Free food? We’re there,” said Kailee Yago, Nikki Oka and Robert Topenio, from left, Saturday, as they enjoy the last batches of Kauai Shrimp plates from Kauai Community College culinary-arts students at the Kauai Community Market at KCC in Puhi.

Kauai Community College chefs Steve Nakata, far left, and Martina Hilldorfer, far right, get a visit from Santa (he even had a Christmas umbrella to deal with the weather) who popped in under the quick tent to get away from the occasional wind-driven showers Saturday at the Kauai Community Market at KCC, where KCC culinary-arts department students offered a demonstration featuring ulu and Kauai Shrimp.

“No, take-out only,” says Mya Smith, whose uncle Jason Ebesu created homemade ramen to cope with the chilly, windy weather Saturday at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College in Puhi.

The weather may have canceled the Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling and soccer events Saturday (Tori Kagawa said she didn’t get the message so came in all the way from the Westside — good thing the Isle Hoops Holiday Classic was taking place so she could take in some basketball!) — but could not stop the shoppers on the last weekend before Christmas, who flocked to the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College (the one in Hanalei was canceled, too), where Jason Ebesu was a hit with his homemade ramen (Elvrine Chow said there was a lot of ono noodles).
