Wall by Coco Palms must go
“Tear down this wall!” That’s what Ronald Reagan said. And although he was talking about the Berlin Wall, his message needs to be conveyed to Kauai County, Hawaii Department of Transportation and whoever-the-heck currently owns Coco Palms.
The large lava wall that sits on the northwest corner of Kuhio Highway and Kuamo‘o Road completely obstructs the line-of-sight for cars turning south onto Kuhio from Kuamo‘o.
It’s both dangerous and a large reason traffic coming down from Wailua Homesteads is so backed up during the morning rush hour. What happens is each person turning right on red has to creep up to Kuhio Highway and peek around the wall before they can safely turn. This slows things a lot!
This intersection is already sketchy with its odd traffic pattern, but the wall dramatically cuts the line of sight and makes a bad situation worse. You can really see the effect around 6:55 a.m. when the southbound traffic on Kuhio is thin but cars are backed up for half a mile up Kuamo‘o. By 7:15 that backup can be as much as 1.5 miles.
Of course the wall isn’t completely responsible for all this, but it definitely contributes, and its effects are even more clear now that all the brush has been cut back. Surely the county has the ability to do something this simple like tear down a single wall to improve traffic.
(P.S. Coco Palms has been abandoned for over 25 years now).
John Patterson, Kapaa
If the wall doesn’t go, will you?
That invite to leave is perfect for all those whining and continuing the agenda to americanize this Hawaiian Kingdom Nation. Soon, when it is too late for these kinds of transplants, we get to move onto the land and into johns house, when he realizes what truth and integrity is as opposed to what he believes is reality, when it is all fraud, one Lie! Then, massive corruption, many guilty “stolen mailbox” notyet uncovered
Wasn’t there a McDonald’s around the area? I’m not particular familiar with the Wailua area. Well…there you have it. The county council got involved and was considered to be McDonald’s worker to the owners of the land. They made a lot of money. While the county council or planning department was worth jack shit. What to do now? The battle of private land continues.
It’s not the wall, it’s the timid or clueless drivers who are seemingly unaware of the designated entry lane turning right onto Kuhio highway allowing cars to get up to speed while merging into traffic. The real culprit for the backup is Kuamoo rd being so narrow there as to not allow longer left and right turn lanes. Maybe widening the road northward, towards or onto Coco Palms property (probably already county right of way) would help to lengthen those lanes.
I’m from the deep south. Country area. Or more specifically mainland terms, the confederates. Laborers so to speak. And there, you see everything. There is nothing that the county council can do. Because the county is dealing with private lands and Hawaiians relentless enough to oppose more development. What should the county do? I’m for the Hawaiians because they say it was their land. 1842 doctrine. The Aina. Before statehood. The county says it is state land. 1959 doctrine. or 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom. The battle on who owns the land is in question. Some feel the Hawaiians own it.
I feel that way. Since it was vacated by the owners of prior years, it went back to the Hawaiians and now they own it. 1842 doctrine. These lands were from the Kings who owned it back then. Of which they leased it to the Chiefs. These lands were called crown lands or ceded lands given back to the Hawaiians, of which is the topic in question.
I feel for the Hawaiians. They have a right too. It was theirs. And is still theirs if you were to go by one rule, under God.
Waaaaa, waaaaa!
The wall was probably there before you were. Deal with it!
Just leave earlier and slooooow down. It’s Kauai time!
Sorry, but I am in favor of the wall, it is a great safety feature; remove the wall and you have people rolling through the red light on their right turn without stopping like you do elsewhere on the island!
Curious what the status of the Coco Palms is currently. Anyone know?
