Climate change a growing threat
Climate change a growing threat
We are fortunate this newspaper publishes our letters even when the news is unfavorable to hear. I am writing to advise our newspaper to report the latest news about the global climate threat to our existence. Other news outlets have promised their public they will publish the latest news regarding the climate threat even when it is chilling. Is the Garden Island News willing and able?
Did you know that out here in the Pacific we will likely be harder hit by this threat than in any other part of the US? That’s because we’re surrounded by coast land. We narrowly escaped two big hurricanes last year. Warming waters are attracting them.
Just today, on Democracy Now broadcasted over KKCR, a UN report was issued that in 2018 the global emissions of methane gas rose higher than it had in any previous year in the past 20 years. Methane is a gas more devastating to climate control than carbon dioxide; 84 times more potent than CO2 in the short term.
I heard Bill McKibben, scientist on tracking climate change said we succeeded in stopping the growth of atmospheric change four years ago but here we are having since shifted to excesses of CO2, methane etc.
I’m encouraging readers to write in to the paper what you are doing to help stem the tide or what you propose we do collectively to help us transition to cleaner energy. Make it local if you can. We are more likely to succeed if it is local. Time is running out to at least avoid the worst effects on life on Earth.
