The light of Kaisa Kahanuolamaikahikina Hesapene Uehara Gramberg shone through the windy dusk via a banner posted on the wall of the laundromat across from the overflowing Hofgaard Park.
Born on Sept. 2, Kaisa enjoyed 47 days here before leaving to become part of the great light upstairs on Oct. 19.
“We’re bringing back the laundromat,” said the Lazaro and Hesapene ohana, gathered on the steps of the building. “The washing machines are still on their way, so we are offering food and drink as a fundraiser for Kauai Hospice, since the space is here.”
More lights turned on Friday night as the West Kauai Business and Professional Association welcomed the holidays with its annual Waimea tree-lighting festivities at Hofgaard Park.
The next big gathering is the annual Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade that this year will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The lighting festivities also mark the start of the town’s Streetfront Lighting Contest, where businesses and residences lining Kaumualii Highway illuminate the Westside darkness with the colorful lights of the season and serve as a backdrop to the caravan of paraders during the Christmas parade.
Robert Westerman, former Kauai Fire Department chief, serves as this year’s parade grand marshal, announced Esther Estes, a member of the WKBPA and the parade coordinator.
