LIHUE — Six sexual assault nurse examiners — Jennifer Antony, Charlene Ono, Ranelle Ka‘awa, Tami Ramil, Stephanie Huhn and Ceisha Judd — were recognized Monday by the Office of the Mayor and County Council, who brought forth a commendation and proclamation.
They were honored during Forensic Nurses Week, celebrated now through Nov. 15.
Forensic nurses are the first responders to victims and perpetrators that experience violence, abuse, neglect and trauma, states the council commendation.
Marking 10 years in existence, the International Association of Forensic Nurses is the voice for forensic nurses globally, and Forensic Nurses Week is designated to recognize dedicated nurses who provide exceptional care to patients impacted by violence.
“Sexual assault, gun violence and human trafficking continue to demand attention, presenting a pivotal opportunity for healthcare facilities to prioritize the needs of patients affected by violence,” states the mayoral proclamation.
Fewer than 20 percent of U.S. hospitals have forensic nurses on staff. The Kauai program was started by KPD Assistant Chief Roy Asher 10 years ago.
