HONOLULU — A retired Honolulu police chief convicted of conspiracy in Hawaii’s biggest corruption case wants a divorce from his wife and co-defendant, a former city prosecutor.
Court records show Louis Kealoha filed for divorce Tuesday.
A jury in June convicted him and Katherine Kealoha of conspiracy in a plot to frame her uncle to keep him from revealing fraud that financed their lavish lifestyle. The Kealohas are facing another trial for bank fraud and identity theft. Katherine Kealoha faces a third trial on drug-dealing charges with her pain physician brother.
The Kealohas have often arrived at court together holding hands and wearing color-coordinated outfits.
Court hearings have aired Katherine Kealoha allegedly lavished bilked money on a firefighter lover.
Defense attorneys for the Kealohas couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Louis Kealoha is not stupid to divorce his criminal wife, not because of emotional hardship or the usual reasons for filing a divorce, but to open the door to save his own okole.
Filing for a divorce now makes sense, once granted, then the former HPD chief can now testify against his former wife to reduce any federal sentence against him. Hey its best to cut that ball and chain before it takes him to the bottom of the ocean.
