PUHI — The Island School boys cross country team was perfect in picking up the team’s third consecutive Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country victory Saturday during the meet hosted by Island School at its Puhi campus.
On the girls’ course, the Kauai High School girls team picked up its third consecutive victory with Emma Burgess clocking 20 minutes, 15.24 seconds over the three-mile course, leading the pack of redshirts.
The Red Raider ladies finished with 25 points, followed by Island School with 45 points. Kapaa’s women ended with 73 points, and Waimea’s girls posted 87 points. Kauai Christian Academy fielded just one runner, Laura Arbo, who crossed 27th overall on a 27:29.95 run.
Matthew Vickers did the honors for the Voyager men, finishing first overall at 17:24.87 to set the pace for the field that saw the first three boys below the 18-minute mark. Overall, the Voyager men finished with 15 points followed by Kauai High School at 42 points. The Menehune men posted 88 points and Kapaa finished with 104 points. KCA’s sole male runner was pulled from the course on injury.
“It’s been quite a while since we had all five scoring runners fill the first five slots,” said Kauai coach Fred Sasan. “This was a perfect race.”
Following Vickers in the lead spot, a position he regained following last week’s race when Joshua Graves took over the lead spot, Graves (17:49.65), Eli Ibbs (17:57.41), Christian Carrington (18:35.76), and James Pratt (18:48.27) crossed the line in the second through fifth overall positions, Pratt overtaking a pair of Kauai runners in the second half of the three-mile course.
Kauai High School posted its first three runners when Damon Johnson (19:01.86), Sam Israelson (19:13.53), and Kai Pappas (19:22.26) started the Red Raider scoring in the sixth through eighth places, respectively.
The next KIF cross country meet will take place Saturday on the campus of Kapaa High School when the boys’ race starts at 7:30 a.m. followed by the girls’ race.
