KIPU — Kipu Ranch Adventures donated $2,700 to the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai Branch on Wednesday.
“This represents the results of a hunger campaign that started in April, May and June,” said Cathy Shanks of Kipu Ranch Adventures. “A portion of specified tours was set aside to help fight hunger. This represents the total of the tours through this period. It is also a part of Kipu Ranch’s giving back to the community.”
Wes Perreira, Hawaii Foodbank Kauai Branch manager, said the funds will be used for the recently inaugurated school pantries program.
“We want to expand it to other schools,” Perreira said. “When we started the program, we did not anticipate the success it has enjoyed, or the student engagement in the program.”
He said since starting the school pantries program, there was an individual at one of the schools who went through the process of getting food. Following several weeks of going through the procedure, that individual developed enough courage to return after all of the students had gone through, and asked for more food to share with the multiple families that share the person’s home.
