HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation in coordination with the federal Transportation Security Administration and county agencies remind the public of the Oct. 1, 2020 date to obtain a REAL ID-compliant Hawaii driver’s license or state identification card with the star in a gold circle marking.
Every person traveling domestically on a commercial airline will need to present a REAL ID-compliant credential or another acceptable form of identification by Oct. 1, 2020, pursuant to the REAL ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005.
If people want to continue using their driver’s licenses for federal identification purposes, such as boarding a commercial aircraft after the deadline, they must have the star in a gold circle on them.
“We want people to know there is about a year remaining until the federal deadline to update your identification. While there is time, we don’t want people to wait until the last minute,” said state DOT Director Jade Butay.
“People should also be aware the driver’s license is not their only option. There are various other acceptable identifications that will work to allow you on a plane.”
Hawaii began issuing REAL ID-complaint licenses and state identification cards on Jan. 16, 2018.

Yeah…so I ( and others in line) showed up at the DVM in Lihue, with all the “requisite” ID available to renew HI DL.. My Passport ( valid picture ID), SS Card( which is never supposed to be used as ID, btw), and a print out of our TMK, showing myself as a co owner. I was then told I was short one piece of ID…..until the person finally had an epiphany: they could use my current DL ( with my picture) as an additional Picture ID fulfillment requirement…DUHHHHH!
What a demeaning, dehumanizing process. I can see where our Kupuna that do not have all of these ID requirements would be hesitant to go through this process…just so they could vote, or “prove” they are legal residents. And for renters? Better bring one or two current utility bills, or even your rental agreement, because none of the DMV staff are consistent in what they will accept…” just a minute, let me check with my supervisor…” My wife and I both went in April. She had less “papers” than I did, however she was given her license ( no SS, btw), and I was sent packing ( I didnt bring my SS the first time either). Now, the older SS cards specifically stated ” not to be used as Identification”….so if you do not have a SS card, better make it down the the SSA Office and get a duplicate before you spend wasted time at the DMV for either a license, or state ID, only to be sent packing. So, as many cops would ask in 1930’s Germany, ” are your papers in order..?” I have always used my passport thru TSA…but in order to continue to drive a vehicle in Hawaii, I must have “Real ID”…..Something happenin here, what it is, seems pretty clear…..several men with guns over there, telling me I got to be’ware….Sound familiar?
So, why not mention how to obtain the “real ID” with a gold star? Seems like the logical thing to do. ????
Their way of wanting more money for pointless projects. What a waste of time and money. Luckily since at least 10 months ago. They ask if you want to add the gold emblem to your license, or at least they asked me and she explained it would be mandatory in the future anyways, so I opted for it, who wouldn’t?
As far as requirements to get a duplicate license, IT IS ALL RIGHT THERE ON THE FORM… you would really have to not read it to not have the right stuff.
