Similarly, Keith Burgess, the Kauai High School trainer, wanted to know what Emma Burgess (she topped the 16 age group for the half marathon at the Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon at the beginning of this month too!) had for breakfast after she took the overall top finisher spot for the girls at the KIF cross country opener.
Kauai High School cross country coach Fred Sasan said Brennen Corregedore had never run before, but the young runner was the top boys finisher for the Red Raiders, finishing fourth overall in the midst of the top four Voyagers (Charles Woolfork is crossing his fingers for another Voyager boys’ victory — that would be their third consecutive!).
Wayne Watanabe’s service was scheduled for Saturday morning, but Kapaa Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves made the trek to Waimea to watch Alaka‘i “Ala” Gonsalves finish tops for the Kapaa men before adjourning to Kapaa for the services.
The Kauai Community Market was a good stopping point as Josie and Jaime Pablo (she’s got the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital breast cancer walk coming Oct. 4!) noticed the special traffic pattern set up for the trail run in Omao Saturday, and Aletha Thomas of Monkeypod Jam had to check out the Aloha Ginger Beer (congratulations to Karen Herrera and Casey Paul!) that had its first day at the Saturday market.
