LIHUE — The Kauai High boys and girls took their respective matches over the Menehune Wednesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches shot at the Kauai High School gym, where big fans on stage helped cool the floor.
The matches were hotly contested, with the Red Raider boys taking the series by just 28 points — 1,260 to 1,232 — led by Kalen Konishi getting one of the highest scores in the prone position at 94 out of a possible 100 points, and 85 points in the standing position. Konishi finished the day with 268 points.
Menehune sharpshooter Derick Soriano topped the Waimea effort with 251 points after breaking 90 in the prone position at 92, and marking the highest in the field at 90 points in the kneeling position.
On the girls’ side, Kauai girls emerged on top by just 34 points — 1,246 to 1,212 — led by Kierstyn Bukoski (93-87-88) finishing with 268 points after notching high-point honors in the standing position with 87 points.
Top point-getter for Waimea was Jenna Antolin, who finished the day at 246 points (90 prone, 74 standing, 82 kneeling).
No results were available at press time for the matches at Kapaa High, which hosted the Island School Voyagers.
The next KIF air riflery matches will have Waimea traveling to Kapaa and Kauai High going to the Island School range Wednesday. Matches at Island School range start at 4 p.m., and matches at Kapaa High start at 4:30 p.m.
