HANAPEPE — Jasmine Akau, assistant coach for the Koloa Rams Mighty Mite cheer squad, said they have been absent for several years, Saturday during the Kauai Pop Warner Football League games at Hanapepe Stadium.
“We haven’t been able to get enough girls to form a squad,” Akau said. “It’s been at least four years, but this year, we’re back, and it feels really good to be back on the field.”
The Koloa Mighty Mite girls were busy pumping up the tackle football players following a heart-breaking 20-18 loss to the Hanapepe Colts Mighty Mites.
That was just one of six matches contested in Hanapepe, hosted by the Kekaha Pop Warner Association.
Hanapepe swept the day’s actions, taking all three of its matches, while Lihue dropped one game to Kekaha.
In the PeeWee division contest that followed, the Hanapepe Colts continued their win streak by edging past Koloa, 6-0.
The Lihue Raiders were a 30-12 winner over the Kapaa Eagles in a Flag division matchup, and the Raiders continued the momentum in the Mighty Mite division with a 26-0 shutout over the Kekaha Titans.
Kekaha turned the tables in the PeeWee division matchup when the Titans shut down Lihue, 14-0.
The final contest saw the Unlimited division take the field with the Hanapepe Colts ending a 38-14 over the Kekaha Titans.
This week’s games move to the Bryan Baptiste Memorial Sports Park stadium complex on Saturday.
