LIHUE — Waimea High and Kauai High swept their respective series as the Kauai Interscholastic Federation opened its air riflery season this week.
Shooting against Kapaa High, the Waimea girls picked up the victory with 1,235 points amassed by its five team shooters, led by Jenna Antolin netting the high score on 254 points. This included 91 points collected in the prone position, 79 points in the standing position, and 84 points in the kneeling position. This was the highest girls’ score of the week, out of a total possible of 300.
Kapaa, with just four shooters, finished with 715 points, led by Sophia Ibanez (79-55-75-209) at the match that was rescheduled to Tuesday night at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
Waimea boys, led by Shannon Caoagdan (94-81-84-259), piled up 1,201 points over the Kapaa 923 total, led by Songkrit Janphet (84-55-80) finishing with a 219-point total.
William Andres led the Kauai High boys to a 1,213 point total over Island School boys’ 1,131 points at the match in the Kauai High gym Wednesday afternoon. In his individual performance, Andres notched a week’s high 95 points in the prone position, 87 points in the standing position, another week’s best, and 85 points in the kneeling position — a point better than Waimea’s Caoagdan and Antolin — to finish as the week’s top point-getter with 267 points.
Ka‘ohu Ranis (89-75-75-239) topped the Voyager boys’ performance.
Kierstyn Bukoski topped the Red Raider ladies, who piled up 1,139 points to the Voyager women’s 893 points. In her individual performance, Bukoski edged out Waimea’s Antolin for high-point honor at 256 points despite being out-pointed in the prone position, 91 to 90, but coming back strong 81-79 in the standing, and 85-84 in the kneeling position.
Bonnie Lee (90-80-81-251) topped the Voyager women effort.
The next KIF air riflery matches take place Wednesday when Kapaa travels to Kauai High in a match that starts at 4:30 p.m. Waimea High School will travel to the Island School range in a match that starts at 3 p.m.
