LIHUE — Learn the ways to identify and speak to people at risk of suicide in a two-day workshop happening on Kauai Oct. 7 and 8.
Entitled the “Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training” (ASIST), the training is hosted by Kauai Mental Health Advocates in partnership with Prevent Suicide Kauai, Hawaii Task Force and Lili’uokalani Trust. At the end, attendees will receive a certificate, however you must attend both days of the workshop to be certified.
“Throughout the past year, community members attending KMHA’s Community Conversations have consistently acknowledged a need to learn how to speak to folks that may have suicidal thoughts,” said Franci Davila, one of the organizers. “ASIST is one of the solutions that Kauai suicide prevention advocates have been working on.”
This is the first of three ASIST trainings KMHA has committed to in the upcoming year, Davila said.
At the training, participants will learn and practice skills in identifying and responding to people at immediate risk of suicide. Organizers say this includes how to recognize signs, provide a skilled intervention, and develop a safety plan to keep someone alive. This is an interactive workshop that will give you the training that you need in order to be a care-giving resource within your community.
The workshop is scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. It will be held at the Lili’uokalani Trust — Kupuka Kauai at 4530 Kali Road in Lihue. Pre-registration is required.
