Kudos to Charlene Dorsey of the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the army of volunteers and leaders (Elsie Bayot and Lovelyn Yadao are the Josie Pablo [she said she was less than 200 percent] wonder women) who brought the final bon dance of 2019 to life Friday on the KVMH front lawn.

Cynthia Chiang (she was celebrating getting her wings with the state Department of Health) drove in all the way from Wailua because this was the last bon dance, and Dana Murata knew four of the five performances done by the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko, so the trip from Kapaa was worth the drive.
Chef Carla Dusenberry (grandma is celebrating 97 years!) had a line (it never ended until everything sold out too!) long before the 5:30 p.m. opening, and Eric Nordmeier had the West Kauai Lions cranking out the flying saucers (they sold out!), and kudos to the Hui Alu Okinawa Club on the great pronto pups (the batter made for some ono not-for-sale andagi after selling out the more than 400 pronto pups). Chef Carla found the CDs, so watch for a re-printing of her cookbook that contains recipes inspired by following grandma around.
John Kruse and Dennis Chun know what to do “on days when there is no wind.” The pair (they were also part of the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School sustainable education breakouts!) worked on Mini Me (that’s the name John came up with), the training sailing canoe being developed to help people with learning to sail the discovery canoes.
