HANALEI — The Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge is back.
“We couldn’t do it last year because of all the damage from the flooding,” said Pam Murphy, swim challenge coordinator. “But everything is good this year.”
The swim is set for Saturday morning. It is the signature fundraiser for Namolokama O’ Hanalei Canoe Club. “It took a long time to get the permit since I submitted the request in February, and it’s only now that we got the permit,” said Hobey Beck, Namolokama president.
The Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge, named one of the top 100 American Open Water Swims by the World Open Water Swimming Association, consists of five races for keiki and kupuna.
Adult distances are 1,000 and 3,000 meters. There is also a fin and snorkel division for those not quite ready for an open ocean swim.
Keiki races start at 9. Adult races go about 9:30. There are awards.
“They start from near the Hanalei Pier and work throughout the Hanalei Bay,” Murphy said. “This is the 12th time we’re hosting the event that is largely a fun family affair and brings competitors from all over the world.”
Safety is a priority during the swim with monitors keeping tabs on swimmers on paddleboards, Jet Skis, and from the shoreline.
“Hanalei Bay is the perfect venue for this in the summer,” Murphy said. “Hanalei Bay has warm, clear, gentle waters and a sandy bottom — perfect for swimmers of all ages and abilities.”
Cost is $50 for adults, $15 for keiki.
