She donned a special tandem surfing cap while rolling footage of Kalani working with the Kauai Junior Lifeguards during the declining surf from the south swell, and will probably be at the Kauai Island Finals Saturday when registration starts at 8 a.m.
Josie Pablo is busy coordinating the 102nd anniversary (it’s today!) of the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital before gettting the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital residents ready for their summer outing to the Salt Pond Beach Park July 23.
Kudos to Rev. Kosen Ishikawa and the Kapaa Jodo Mission members and volunteers on hosting a great bon dance (yes, they had Flying Saucers, Lester Iwamasa!) despite the interruptions from passing showers. This weekend, the bon dance moves to the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji (they have Flying Saucers, too).
Lester had a nice dissertation about Flying Saucers (he got his molds on Amazon!) to Gerald Hirata of the Kauai Soto Zen Temple, but digressed to include chow fun (how many remember that from the Lihue Chop Suey?), pronto pups (they make some really good ones at the Waimea Town Celebration), and what is this “gravy burgers?” Isn’t that like hamburger steak?
Jocelyn Barriga and the Kauai Special Olympics crew will be doing andagi at the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission bon dance, and what is the special for the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital event on Aug. 9 (I believe the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair follows)?

Good morning Dennis. I’ve been following and contributing to the discussions between my brother Lester and his friend James Sone. All of us were originally from Maui and I married a girl from Hilo who schooled me on gravy burgers which are literally a hamburger patty placed on a bun with a generous scoop of thick brown gravy put on the patty. It is definitely a Hilo thing (or perhaps a Big Island thing – don’t want to offend my Kona side friends) which can be still had at Verna’s Drive In for. Doesn’t sound like much but if done right, very ono. Yes as you said, lots of good stuff on every island if you look. As a closing note, I’ve been fortunate enough to have had Hanamaulu Cafe’ chicken a few times and I wish it still existed. Have a great day – Nathan Iwamasa/Mililani, Oahu
