LIHUE — Friends of the Lihue Public Library volunteer Janet Vegas needed another cardboard box, and members of the library’s chess club pondered the sign outside the library’s conference room, Wednesday.
The conference room was being used to accommodate the Friends of the Lihue Public Library used book sale that starts Friday at 10 a.m. and continues through Saturday at 4 p.m. This meant the chess club was relocated to the teen corner inside the library as Vegas returned with her carton to hold the overflow from her work at cataloging the record collection.
“This is a record bonanza,” said Dorene Sautner of the friends group. “Janet has been busy cataloging, sorting and cleaning the collection, and just got done so we can offer the records for sale.”
Vegas said the collection is quite extensive, ranging from the more familiar record albums in a variety of genre to vintage 78 rpm records, and 45 rpm singles.
“We also have a large collection of CDs,” Sautner said. “We can’t take them all out at once, but everything will be available for sale. There are also DVDs available.”
The record collection will remain in its location and will be monitored by Vegas who, armed with a spreadsheet, can keep track of what is remaining for sale.
Carolyn Larson, library branch manager, said books come in on a daily basis.
“Dorene does a remarkable job of receiving these contributed books,” Larson said. “She comes in twice a week and cleans, sorts and checks to see how the contributed books can enhance the library’s collection. The remaining books are sorted and fuel the used-book sale.”
Book titles range from children’s and young adults’ books to adult nonfiction and, like the records and CDs, are available at bargain prices, including a buy-four-get-one-free special.
“For this sale, we have some Hawaiiana, and a lot of reference books,” Larson said. “There are lots of nonfiction as well as books on politics.”
Proceeds from the used book sale are used to supplement funds for the library’s programs and furniture.
