LIHUE — Five recipients of Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation awards garnered $25,000 in scholarships Saturday during a special luncheon at Dukes Canoe Club restaurant on Kalapaki Beach hosted by Rose Johnston of Sea Shell Diamond Gallery in Waimea.
“These students are the best of the best,” said Paul McCarthy, vice president of Sea Shell Diamond Gallery. “They represent the top 2% of Scholastic Achievement Test results and are among the top students in their classes. These are the students who earned scholarships from the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation, and represent the five Rotary clubs on the island.”
Those students who were accompanied by their guests, included Brandie Aguinaldo, who had spent the morning volunteering with the Wilcox Health group at the Mayor-a-thon; Juliana Tampus, who had just returned from a family trip; and Kane Casillas, who is anxious to start his summer internship at FM97. The other top students are Maceo Cantu and Victoria Hennessy.
The HRYF was founded by Maurice J. Sullivan during his year as Rotary Hawaii district governor in 1976. It was Sullivan’s desire to assist Hawaii high school graduates to realize their potential by attending a college or university of their choice. Scholarship awards are for $5,000 each to graduating high school seniors.
