LIHUE — The Hawaii Department of Transportation said Friday that following the completion of the full weekend closure of Waikoko Bridge on Kuhio Highway, on Monday, June 17 at 5 a.m., the highway will be opened without restrictions.
Kuhio Highway past Waipa Bridge is currently accessible only to placard-holders on a set convoy schedule. Crews will be working on Kamehameha Day on Tuesday, and access will be on the Monday-Saturday schedule.
Non-residents planning to access the area after restrictions are lifted are reminded of the following:
w A “no parking” zone has been established between Haena Place and Ke‘e Beach. Parking along Kuhio Highway in this zone is a violation of Chapter 291C-111 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes and could result in fines of $200 plus an additional $200 surcharge.
w Access to Haena State Park is by reservation: www.hanaleiinitiative.org
w Construction closures to complete the replacements of Waikoko Bridge and Waipa Bridge are scheduled for the nights of Wednesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 13. The full weekend closure for Waikoko Bridge is scheduled for June 14-17.
w The second full weekend closure of Kuhio Highway at Waipa Bridge is now scheduled for July 12-15. This closure was scheduled to avoid the weekends of the Haena-to-Hanalei Run (June 29), and the July 4th holiday weekend. Wainiha and Haena residents and other authorized placard-holders should retain their placards for access during the full weekend closure in July.
After all this time and all the money spent, and available, the website
kauaiNSshuttle.com doesn’t work, or even seem to exist.
When Googled it just sends you back to https://www.hanaleiinitiative.org/the-shuttle which then tells you to go to the first site.
The maps that are always posted by TGI are unusable.
Sure, glitches can be expected in a new system, but total dysfunction is really sad. I feel sorry for my friends and family that still have to live with such incompetence. Sure hope management gets it together.
the Shuttle site will be available June 17th, once the road re-opens.
poorly run county, poorly run state.
Disfunction is what u get when liberals rule! It’s in their plan to maintain a constant state of confusion.
STARTING JUNE 17 PLACARD HOLDING NIMBYS CAN EAT DUST!!!
Speaking of dysfunction, the idea to open the highway before work on the bridges has been completed is a recipe for disaster. It’s slow going now owing to ongoing construction, but imagine how it’ll be when hundreds and hundreds of vehicles are lined up waiting to cross. God help us.
