OMAO — More than 200 keiki and adult riders competed in the seventh annual Boys Day Hare &Hound and Poker Run races Sunday. The dirt bike races were hosted by the Garden Island Motorcycle Club in Omao.
“It went smooth. It rained a little, but it was good because it was a little dust control,” said Bertram Almeida, Garden Island Motorcycle Club president. “In the mountains, it was a little more challenging for the A’s and B’s. But overall, no one got injured. A couple of broken bikes, but everyone got home safely.”
In the hare and hound races, riders collect checkpoints along the course and the first to turn in all their checks wins. In the poker run races, participants will collect cards instead of checks and whoever gets the best hand wins.
In the Class A expert hare and hound races, Kealoha Estrella won the 40+ race and Chris Satterfield won the 39-and-under race.
In the Class B intermediate hare and hound races, Eric Goo won the 40+ race and Eljay Camat won the 39-and-under race.
Bryson Peralta won the Class C novice poker run race, and Kameron Sakihama-Haumea won the Class D beginner and quads poker run race.
“This race is more centered around the kids and all that. It’s more of a warmup to our signature event, which the Labor Day Hare &Hound, which is going to be the 65th annual this year,” Almeida said. “I think the overall consensus is that everyone had a good time. The trails were well-established and well-marked. Everybody had a really good time. All the stuff was free — the hot dogs, shave ice, cookies, all that stuff was free for them to enjoy.”
He added: “I just want to thank the business on the island and the community for their support to making this a huge success. We get a lot of cooperation through the businesses. They come out and help for free. A lot of the business and individuals donating prizes, they really make it a fun event.”
